Retaining Walls Design

Terraced stonework that turns a slope into usable ground.

On the hillsides and graded lots so common across the Portland metro, a retaining wall is rarely just structure — it's the move that makes a yard livable. FloraStone Studio designs walls that hold the grade, carve out level terraces, and read as a natural part of the landscape rather than a barrier dropped on top of it.

Every wall is composed inside the larger plan and resolved in photorealistic 3D before any work begins, so you see exactly how the stone, the planting pockets, and the terraces above and below relate — long before our trusted contractor network breaks ground.

Designed for the grade, not against it

We study how water moves, where the sun lands, and how you want to use each level, then design walls that work with the slope. The result is terracing that feels intentional — usable patios, planting beds, and pathways that step gracefully down a property instead of fighting it.

Stone that belongs in the Northwest

Material choice is a design decision. We specify segmental wall systems and natural stone selected to weather our wet winters and dry summers, with color and texture chosen to sit comfortably against native plantings and the surrounding canopy.

Brands we use

For retaining walls and segmental systems, these are the brands we love to design with; our trusted contractor network builds from the plan.

  • Belgard — Pavers & walls. Engineered pavers, wall systems, and outdoor living kits we reach for when a design calls for refined color and proven Pacific Northwest durability.
  • Western Interlock — Pavers & walls. Oregon-made pavers and segmental retaining wall systems, manufactured in the Willamette Valley — local stone we love to specify for local landscapes.
